TIRUNELVELI: Demanding better infrastructure in areas where people belonging to Arunthathiyar community live, a group of Aathi Thamizhar Peravai functionaries staged a dharna at the Corporation’s Melapalayam Zonal Office here on Thursday.

Protestors said areas in Anna Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Gandhi Nagar and Bharathiyarpuram, all under ward 30 of Tirunelveli Corporation where the Arunthathiyar community people live, lacked basic amenities.

The sewage channels in these areas were chocked and were potential breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The overhead tank meant to provide drinking water for these residential areas was out of use for the past several years.

The public toilet, a dilapidated structure, was yet to be renovated despite repeated requests from the residents of these areas.

“To highlight our demands, we’re staging a dharna,” said T. Elangovan, Aathi Thamizhar Peravai’s Melapalayam area secretary.
