NGT restrains city varsity

The Hindu, 08 January, 2014

CHENNAI: The National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, has restrained SRM University, Kattankulathur, from discharging untreated solid waste into a stormwater drain that connects to Guduvanchery lake. The Bench passed the interim order on an application filed by M.K. Dhandapani, president of Nandivaram-Guduvanchery panchayat union.

Mr. Dhandapani said the Maraimalai Nagar municipality has been constructing a stormwater drain, which passes through the university’s campus, for outflow of excess water from Pothery lake to Guduvanchery lake. Taking advantage of the presence of the drain, the university may let untreated sewage water into it.

“If sewage and medical waste from the campus are let into the lake, it will ultimately affect drinking water supply to residents,” the applicant said.
