Collector unhappy over tardy pace of sanitation campaign

The Hindu, 11 January, 2013

Sets February 15 as deadline for completion of IHL target in Guntur dt.

PRATHIPADU: District Collector S. Suresh Kumar has set a deadline of February 15 to complete the target of constructing Individual Household Latrine (IHL) in the district.

Addressing a constituency level meeting in the village, the Collector expressed his displeasure over the tardy progress of the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) in the district and wanted the nodal departments to complete the targets quickly.

Financial assistance up

Mr. Suresh Kumar said the Central Government under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) had enhanced the financial assistance to Rs.9,100 per unit. Women members of SHGs would be provided with financial assistance of Rs.2,500.

Defecating in the open had become a matter of concern, particularly to womenfolk, who had to leave their houses at odd hours, he observed. The Collector also declared that all schools in the district will have toilets soon and a maintenance grant of Rs.500 per month would be paid to the schools.

He wanted the sarpanches to take an active role in the sanitation programme.

Cooperation sought

Project Director of District Water Management Agency S. Dilli Rao admitted that the district had been lagging in the sanitation programme and said that of 77,000 units sanctioned, only 13,000 units had been completed so far.

Project Director of DRDA P. Prasanthi said that the programme could become successful only by the cooperation from the public.

Later, addressing a meeting at Tadikonda, the Collector said that performance of the constituency had been one of the worst in the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan programme. Out of sanctioned units of 11, 609, just 383 had been completed.
