Sanitation poll plank in Cuttack

The Hindu, 10 January, 2013

CUTTACK: Poor drainage and sewerage here have been the key issue in every poll and things are no different this time. All major parties have geared up to highlight the obsolete infrastructure in the ensuing Cuttack Municipal Corporation elections.

"In last five years, the ruling BJD had done nothing to improve the drainage and sewerage system in the city. Things have only turned from bad to worse," said senior BJP leader Samir Dey.

"We will highlight the failure of BJD government as the Integrated Sanitation Development Project, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to overhaul the sanitation system was not started in time," Dey added. He said during the BJP rule from 2004-09, many culverts were constructed and drains repaired to address waterlogging. "BJP had taken lots of steps to solve sanitation problems," Dey said.

Congress said precarious drainage will be a major poll plank. "For long, Cuttack has been facing waterlogging. During the monsoon, the entire city was submerged in knee-deep water and the denizens had a harrowing time," said president of Congress, city unit, Md Moquim.

"For over dozen years, BJD has been in power in the state but the government has always neglected the city and done nothing to address the problem," he claimed.

CMC mayor Soumendra Ghose (BJD) refuted the allegations. "In my tenure, mechanized sweeping system was introduced, leading to improved sanitation," he said. The civic body also started work on the JICA project. "It's completely wrong to say that we have not done anything," said Ghose.
