Work on sewage treatment plant launched

The Hindu, 16 January, 2014

PATHANAMTHITTA: Devaswom Minister V.S. Sivakumar has laid the foundation stone for the much sought-after sewage treatment plant (STP) at the Sabarimala Sannidhanam at a function held at the Devaswom auditorium at Sabarimala on Tuesday.

The Minister said the proposed STP would be ready for commissioning by the next pilgrim season. Hyderabad-based Ramky Infrastructure Ltd. is implementing the project, estimated at Rs.22.87 crore. Mr. Sivakumar said as many as 27 queue complex units would be constructed on the traditional trekking path between Marakkoottom and Sabarimala.

He said each unit would cost Rs.1 crore and the project, once completed, would be of great help in crowd management at Sabarimala.

Mr. Sivakumar said the proposed queue complex was modelled on the one at Tirupati and it would be a self-contained one with cafeteria, toilets, etc., where devotees could wait for their turn for holy darshan with ease.

This was besides the new double-storied Valiyanadappanthal planned at the Sannidhanam. The project was estimated at Rs.20 crore.

Water project

Mr. Sivakumar said the proposed drinking water supply project for Nilackal, estimated at Rs.77 crore, would also be implemented soon.

M.P. Govindan Nair, Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president, presided.
