Toilet for every house by 2015, says Collector

KARUR: People must come forward to establish lavatories in every household to ensure high standards of public hygiene and sanitation levels.


In doing so, the people would be preventing themselves and others from a host of communicable diseases, District Collector S. Jayandhi told villagers at a gram sabha meet at Pudur in Andankoil East panchayat in Karur district on the occasion of Republic Day on Sunday.

Participating as an observer in the meeting, Ms. Jayandhi told the villagers that public sanitation and hygiene are vital to the development of the rural populace. Households must appreciate the need to have individual lavatories wherever possible.


It has been planned to ensure that all households had toilets by 2015, and she called upon the people to abide by the deadline by cooperating with the authorities in constructing a toilet in their households, where none existed.


The Collector also reminded the villagers that the proper route to strengthen grassroots democracy and ensure development were subjected to social audit, it was imperative that all participate actively in the gram sabha meetings.


Issues discussed


They also discussed subjects including rural water supply, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Chief Minister’s Solar Powered Green House Project, Indra Awas Yojana, public sanitation and means to reduce plastics usage among other issues.


Gram sabha meetings were held in all the 157 panchayats in Karur district where the government sponsored agenda was passed with the local panchayats adding their demands to the list.


District Revenue Officer M. Aruna, RDO Nellai Vendhan, Assistant Director of Panchayats Vijayalakshmi, Pudhu Vazhvu Project Officer Rubavel, Panchayat president R. Sekar and others participated.
