Jaya Grants Rs 10 Crore to Free TN from Open Defecation

CHENNAI: As part of the State government’s efforts to make Tamil Nadu as a State, free from open defecation by 2015, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday allocated Rs 10 crore for constructing 77 integrated sanitary complexes in 73 town panchayats.


During her previous tenure as the Chief Minister, a total of 12,796 Integrated Sanitary Complexes for Women, which were in a state of disuse were renovated at a cost of Rs 170 crore, thereby restoring the basic sanitation facilities for rural women. Further, she has allocated Rs 35 crore for constructing 770 integrated sanitary complexes for men, two each per panchayat union. Besides, she has hiked the unit cost for setting up of toilets in individual houses from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 and ordered construction of 4,56,901 such toilets across the State, the release added.


During 2011-12, a total of 52 integrated sanitary complexes were constructed in as many town panchayats and 75 sanitary complexes in 62 town panchayats were renovated at an expenditure of Rs 19.83 crore.
