Open-defecation free zone declared

PHIDIM: Panchthar was declared the first open-defecation free district of the eastern region today.


Attending a function organised at district development committee’s open stage today, CA member Ganesh Kambang and Ishwori Prasad Paudel, Director General of Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, jointly declared the district the first open-defecation free zone. As the government has been working on a master plan of declaring the entire country an open-defecation free zone by 2017, it has announced Kaski, Chitwan, Tanahun, Pyuthan, Parbat, Arghakhanchi, Makawanpur, Bhaktapur and Mustang districts open-defecation free regions so far.


Tulasi Bahadur Shrestha, local development officer and Chairman of drinking water and sanitation cleanliness coordination committee of the district, said the district was announced open-defecation free zone after all 37,933 households managed cemented toilets.


Department of drinking water and sanitation rewarded the district with cash prize Rs 5 lakh, recognising its contribution to keeping the district neat and clean. A rally was taken out on the occasion.
