RWA to take over sanitation in Sec 21

TNN, 18 February 2014

GURGAON: Setting a precedent, the residents' welfare association of a HUDA sector has been handed the responsibility of managing sanitation work in its colony, a task which, until now, was given to private contractors.

Announcing the decision, PC Meena, HUDA administrator, said, "I have cleared the proposal allowing the RWA of Sector 21 to manage the sanitation work. The idea is to involve residents directly to ensure quality work at the grassroot level." The agreement between the HUDA and the RWA is being drawn up and funds will be released to the RWA monthly.

Meena also said: "I personally think that the RWA-HUDA tie-up will work better than hiring contractors for sanitation jobs. RWAs in many HUDA sectors are already responsible for maintenance of parks in their colonies."

However, this decision has upset the private contractors in the city. "Ideally the HUDA must follow the tendering process and allow the RWA to bid. RWAs have no expertise in sanitation work and it is likely that they will outsource the job to private contractors like us," said a private contractor.

Umed Singh , president, Sector 21 RWA rubbished this claim. "We are confident that we will do a better job than a private contractor for the simple reason that our motive is quality work not profit. The residents will work as volunteers and this will be done on a daily basis."
