Gescom takes up sanitation issue

Joins hands with UNICEF to provide individual toilets to every household

 

The Gescom has joined the campaign of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan with the objective of ensuring every household has a toilets.

GULBARGA: The Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (Gescom) has become the first Escom in the state, if not in the country, to take up the cause of ending the practice of open defecation and improving the sanitation facilities in the rural and urban areas, by joining the campaign of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan for achieving the objective of every household having individual toilets.


The Gescom and the UNICEF joined hands on Monday to launch the initiative in an attempt to reach out to more than 24 lakh households in Gulbarga, Raichur, Koppal, Bidar, Yadgir, and Bellary district coming under the jurisdiction of the Gescom.

 

Electricity bill

 

Every month catchy slogans will be printed on the backside the electricity bills. The initiative has been taken up as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme of the Gescom. Speaking on the occasion, managing director of the Gescom Pallavi Akurathi said that the emphasis of the implementing agencies should be to first remove the misconceptions about toilets and explain the ill effects of the open defecation to the people. Ms. Akurathi said that overall increase in the expenditure of printing the electricity bills would be the tune of just 1.5 per cent.
