TUTICOIRN: In a bid to create an awareness of sanitation facilities and practices, a rally involving students of educational institutions and members of self-help groups was taken out here on Tuesday.

The programme, which is organised by the District Rural Development Agency under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, was flagged off by S.P. Shanmuganathan, Tourism Minister, in the presence of Collector M. Ravikumar and J. Bella, Project Director, DRDA.

With subsidy

The campaigners took out the rally, which commenced from Pudukottai and concluded at Kumaragiri. They primarily promoted the concept of using individual household toilets to ensure total sanitation, thereby avoiding open defecation.

Ms. Bella said as many as 1,43,000 rural households in the district had individual toilets as per a recent survey. So, efforts were being made to provide sanitation facilities for them. A target of constructing 2,000 individual toilets for such houses every month was fixed. She said the government subsidy of Rs. 10,200 was being provided to construct a toilet, for which the construction cost is Rs. 11, 100.
