CCP gets Rs 72cr for waste management plant

TNN, 26 February 2014

PANAJI: The Union ministry of urban development has sanctioned 72 crore towards the CCP's solid waste management plant proposed at Baiguinim, mayor Surendra Furtado said on Tuesday.

The funds sanctioned under the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission (JNNURM) scheme will be released in a phased manner, and the first installment of 17.90 crore is expected to arrive shortly, he added.

The total cost of the modernized waste treatment facility will come upto 90 crore, of which the state government will have to contribute 20%, or 18 crore.

"The DPR was cleared by the central sanctioning and monitoring committee that met at New Delhi today, without any queries or revision. This grant under JNNURM scheme will take Panaji closer to the 'mission city' that it is touted to become," Furtado said. He noted that the centre had also allotted funding for 125 new buses, to Kadamba transport corporation under the same scheme, to enhance Goa's transport network.

The solid waste management facility is planned on a 1.10 lakh sq m plot, which was acquired for the purpose four years ago. A 500-metre buffer zone will also be created around the plant, which will take care of both composting of biodegradable waste and recycling of plastics, Furtado added.

"Goa state infrastructure development board has already tendered the construction of a retaining wall around the plot. We will also create a technical team of specialized experts and engineers to execute the project," Furtado said, while refusing to set a date for the project's completion.

The mayor also said that the central government would, by next week, sanction an additional 32 crore towards the beautification of the St Inez creek. He said that the funds would be released as soon as the CCP hands over a report with statistics of Panaji's hourly rainfall for the last 25 years.
