Wka observes NRDW&S sanitation awareness week

An awareness drive on national drinking water and sanitation, sponsored by WSSO, PHED, Kohima, and organized by PHED, Wokha, was conducted from February 20 to 25 at Wokha.

 

The awareness week was launched by deputy commissioner, Wokha, Vyasan R, on February 20 at Town Hall, Wokha.

 

Vyasan spoke on the importance of safe water and good sanitation and at the same time emphasized on water conservation.

 

He encouraged the participants to have a strong resolution that demanded from every household to own from every household to own a sanitary toilet while also encouraging the participants to have a strong resolution that demanded from every household to own a sanitary toilet and to completely put an end to open defection.

 

CMO, Dr. W.N Ezung highlighted on the major public health problems faced in the country as a result of water and excreta borne diseases and he further urged the participants to spread awareness in order to reduce such problems.

 

The participants were also briefed in this connection by CDPO, Soren Kikon, social welfare, Wokha, Aremo Ezung, SDEO, Wokha, and executive secretary, KBES, Rev. Kithan, where IEC consultant and Chemist, PHED, Wokha, also exhorted the participants.

 

As part of the awareness week, the Kyong Eloe Hoho, also organized two IEC campaigns on safe drinking water and sanitation at Bhandari and Sanis under Wokha district where church and women leaders, anganwadi workers, teachers, ASHA, SHGs, village leaders attended the programme.

 

Along with the Kyong Eloe Hoho, the IEC consultant and chemist, PHED, Wokha, also shared the importance of safe water and good sanitation for community health.

 

On February 24, the department had also organized a high school level painting competition on the topic “Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation” at LTC Hall, Wokha, where 31 students from various schools of Wokha town took part.

 

In the competitions, Myanthungo R. Humtsoe (Isaiah Ability School), Mhathung (Libemo Memorial School), and E. Zuben Shitiri (Christian Model High School) were declared as the winner and 1st and 2nd runner-ups respectively.

 

In connection to the inter district exposure trip for WATSAN committee members, a trip was also conducted to Chuchuyimpang village (Nirmal Gram Puraskar Village) under Mokokchung district on February 25 where 46 WATSAN members from 26 villages under Wokha participated.
