Private agencies to provide portable toilets for mela

Sumita Sarkar, TNN, 03 March 2014

NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Sunday invited expressions of interest (EOI) from private agencies in the city to provide portable toilets/urinals on rental basis for the forthcoming Simhastha Kumbh mela.

Around 75 lakh pilgrims are expected to visit Nashik during the main Parvani days of Kumbh scheduled in August next year. To provide sanitation to the visitors, 10,000 portable toilets/urinals will be installed at various places in the city through private agencies. The last date to express interest in the proposal is end of this month.

Around 3 lakh sadhus are expected for the mela and they will be accommodated at the Sadhugram to be developed on 328.32 acres of land at Tapovan.

"Providing basic amenities to sadhus and other pilgrims visiting the city during Kumbh is going to be a challenge for the civic administration. We had started chalking out plans for toilet facilities in October 2013 after we got funds sanctioned by the high-powered committee. We will be hiring portable toilets or urinal blocks from private agencies during the Parvani days. The agency will have to provide, install, operate, maintain and later remove the toilets within the NMC limits. These will have to be provided on the inner and outer ring route, parking areas in Ramghat and adjoining areas including the routes from Sadhugram and Ramghat," an NMC official said.

The official said that 3,300 such toilets will be provided at the inner and outer ring route, 3,300 at Ramghat and adjoining areas and 3,400 for the sadhugram and the Ramghat route. A provision of Rs 35 crore for toilets has been made in the Rs 1031.91-crore Kumbh plan of the NMC.
