All slums in the capital to be brought under water supply network by 2015: Ashraf, 06 March 2014


All the slums in the city will be brought under the water supply network by 2015, said LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Sayed Ashraful Islam to the Jatiya Sangshad. Answering the questions by the treasury bench member Morshed Alam the minister said that the Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) has been given 1300 water supply connections to 250 slums covering 70,000 families or 3.15 slum dwellers.


In order to ensure supply water and improving drainage and sewerage system 3 separate master plans have already been passed. Steps have also been taken to avail proper and safe drinking water. Online bill payment has also been introduced in DWASA, informed the Minister. He even added that in order to avail customer services the consumers has to dial (16172), as a call center has already been set.


In response to the supplementary question by MP Haji Mohammad Selim, Sayed Ashraf said the government is facing difficulties in fulfilling the supply due to the rapid rise in demand. He added that the installation of the water treatment plants are quite expensive, moreover the nearby rivers are highly contaminated which makes it more difficult. However the government is trying to solve this crisis through other methods.
