Start door-to-door waste collection, Taleigao VP told

TNN, 05 May 2014

PANAJI: Taleigao panchayat should consider segregation of garbage at source by starting door-to-door waste collection in the village and then link up with the government's dry waste scheme for its disposal, say some residents.

Reacting to St Cruz MLA Atanasio 'Babush' Monserrate's criticism that the government has not done anything to set up a plant to treat the waste, Xavier Almeida of Save Taleigao Front (STF) alleged that Monserrate did not initiate any measures for waste management during his tenure as minister and local MLA in the Congress government for years.

The suburban area with broad roads and tree lined promenades has drawn praise for Monserrate's performance as Taleigao MLA till 2012. But, farmers and some villagers are opposed to large-scale urbanization without adequate power, water and requisite infrastructure for solid waste management. Mounds of plastic litter and its collection and disposal pose a huge problem to the village with a growing sprawl of residential complexes and apartment blocks.

"He had full control of the panchayat and still does, but though local MLA Jennifer Monserrate held a meeting with CCP commissioner a couple of years back to start door-to-door collection, there was no follow up and mixed garbage is being collected and just dumped," Almeida said.

The state government's monitoring-cum-working committee for solid waste management, has offered panchayats which collect their waste, to join the system initiated by it to hand over the waste for disposal.

"The panchayat should start door-to-door collection to begin with, as it is important," Almeida said.

Jennifer has alleged that the grant-in-aid offered by panchayats department is inadequate to set up a facility.

The STF convener also pointed out that although the fields were flooded with sewage near Camrabhat recently, the local MLA did not visit the site to redress the farmers grievance. Pundalik Raikar, a villager said problems have been created by haphazard planning.
