MADURAI: Stagnant sewage in a storm water drain running adjacent to the nursing hostel canteen on the Government Rajaji Hospital premises here poses health hazard to several nursing students. The stench emanating from the open drain is unbearable, say nursing students at the hostel.
Food for the students is prepared at the kitchen adjoining the drain which has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Making things worse, the clogged sewage got washed back to the toilets in the hostel during the recent downpour.

The drain began overflowing with sewage that leaked from the sewer pipes outside the hostel building, making it impossible for the students to eat in the canteen or even step out of the building, the students lamented.
When contacted, a Public Works Department Official said repair works are under way. Medical Superintendent S. Vadivel Murugan has promised to look into the issue and take steps to cover the drain.
