Koppal ZP tops in implementation of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan

M. AHIRAJ, The Hindu, 02 May 2014

KOPPAL: Koppal Zilla Panchayat has topped in the State in the implementation of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan by constructing 54,101 individual household toilets between April 2013 and March 2014. Zilla panchayat president Janardhan Huligi said,“After taking over as president, that too for a short stint of 10 months of the 20-month term, I was surprised to see the mismatch between the high expenditure on health and the ailments of the people. Open defecation was said to be one of the main reasons. To over come it, we took a decision to construct one lakh household toilets in a year and organised campaigns.

Krishna Udupudi, Chief Executive Officer, and other elected representatives and officials, supported him.

“To start with, we launched the ‘arji’ (application) campaign, followed by ‘prerana’ (motivation), creating awareness among schoolchildren to inform their parents about the importance of household toilets.

Though the response was not very encouraging in the beginning, it started gaining momentum when we adopted some novel methods to achieve the goal,” he said.

“To persuade people to avoid open defecation, I visited households in the early hours of the day requesting them to have their own toilets. I even fell at their feet. After that, we launched a whistle campaign. A group of people in every village will start whistling when they see any person defecating in the open; this clicked,” he said with pride.

As many as 51,809 household toilets were constructed in 134 gram panchayats between April and February while 2,292 were completed in March, of which 41,442 have been verified during the social audit.
