‘Eradicate manual scavenging’

GULBARGA: Former Member of the National Safai Karamchari Commission Jagadish Hiremani has said that manual scavenging was still prevalent in five districts including Gulbarga, Kolar, Haveri, Davanagere and Belgaum in the State and the government has done little or nothing to eradicate the despicable practice despite directions in this regard by the Union government and commission.


Addressing a press conference in Gulbarga on Saturday, Mr. Hiremani said there were more than 2, 000 families involved in the manual scavenging in the State and in Gulbarga alone there were around 100 families. A survey conducted by the Karnataka Safai Karmacharigala Okkuta in Gulbarga revealed that there were more than 160 open toilets in the city which are cleaned regularly by these manual scavengers.
