Target set to end open defecation

Sets a target of completing IHHL targets by Sept.30


In a concerted bid to end the practice of open defecation, district Collector Kantilal Dande on Wednesday set a target of completely grounding 90,000 Individual House Hold Latrines (IHHL) by the end of September. At a review meeting held with various departmental heads, Mr. Dande asked them to get cracking and complete the targets by September 30.


Construction of IHHL was being taken up under the flagship programme of Central Government -- Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) -- though implementation has been dogged by a few factors like lack of enthusiasm for clean sanitary practices and misgivings of pollution. In SC/ST colonies, the financial component has impeded the programme.


As a result, the district has lagged behind in the project. Out of 1.50 lakh IHHL sanctioned, only 35,000 units were grounded and 25,000 units were in various stages of completion. Read more....
