A clean lack of sanitation in over 3 lakh rural households in Vellore district

Though it was 15 years since the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) was launched by the Ministry of Rural Development of the Central government throughout the country with the objective of motivating rural households without individual household latrines (IHHLs) to construct IHHLs with the subsidy given by the government, 3,07,908 rural households in the 743 village panchayats in 20 blocks in Vellore district are without IHHLs as per a survey conducted recently by the Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Department of the Tamil Nadu government under the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA).


The objectives of the TSC include improvement in the general quality of life and acceleration of sanitation coverage in the rural areas, and more specifically the elimination of the unhealthy practice of open defecation in order to minimise the risk of contamination of drinking water sources and food, conversion of dry latrines into flush latrines and elimination of manual scavenging. But even today, open defecation along the bunds of the Palar River and open places was still in vogue in many villages. Read more....
