Sanitation contract at KGH raises stink

VISAKHAPATNAM: The authorities at King George Hospital (KGH) are in a catch-22 situation. Though usually, the problems plaguing the hospital are centred round delayed projects and works, this time it is a new project, or rather a new contract that has got mired in controversy - engaging a new contractor for sanitation and security.


Despite a stay on recruiting a new contractor by the Andhra Pradesh High Court, KGH authorities were allegedly instructed by the APMSIDC (AP Medical Services Infrastructure Development Corporation) to engage a new contractor. But surprisingly, the old security and sanitation staff has not been replaced and continues to work under the new contractor.


As per reliable hospital sources, for the last two years SOS Contractors was the third party supplying contract sanitation and security workers. After the APMSIDC called for a new tender, the contract was given to another agency called Crystal. But the SOS Contractors went to court and got a stay on the new appointment. Despite the stay, APMSIDC was allegedly insistent that the hospital superintendent give the contract to the new agency, which now has around 50 security and sanitation staff working under it.
