GULBARGA: A village in Aland taluk of Gulbarga district, which has a population of 600, has achieved total sanitation with all of its 147 households owning toilets. Shikravadi has 137 below poverty line families.
The village could achieve total sanitation thanks to government initiatives and efforts by Tadkal gram panchayat. Recognizing the feat, Gulbarga zilla panchyat CEO T H M Kumar felicitated members of the gram panchyat on Monday.
It was Baburao, the gram panchayat chairman in 2011-2012, who spearheaded the mission. Enlightened after attending a training programme organized by Infosys Foundation, he explained the ill effects of defecating in the open to villagers and persuaded them to start the total sanitation programme.
