3 More PSUs for School Bio-Toilet Project

BHUBANESWAR: After Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), three more national public sector units have been assigned the job of constructing bio-toilets in schools of the State as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.


Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) under the Ministries of Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy will construct 50,000 toilets in schools across the country before August 2015. Work on 1,001 toilets was initiated on October 2 in various States.


The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) and Coal India Limited (CIL) will construct 730 toilets in 10 States including Odisha. In the first phase, CIL will construct 400 toilets, NTPC 240 and PGCIL 90.


For construction of these toilets, the national PSUs will provide 50 per cent of the fund from their Corporate Social Responsibility Budget for 2014-15 and 2015-16. In a move towards providing safe and hygienic sanitation facilities for students, GAIL had contracted 1,021 bio-toilets across the country including 375 in Odisha under Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya scheme.
