Poor response to PM’s call on toilets

Firms sign up for building only 16,009 units in govt. schools


The corporate sector has been sluggish in responding to the government’s call for using Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for building toilets in government schools with various companies signing up to building only 16,009 toilets two months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the appeal. And, 2,44,934 government schools need toilets.


According to data collected by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry, 35 corporates and public sector undertakings (PSUs) have pledged support for building toilets in schools as part of the Clean School Campaign. In his Independence Day speech, Mr. Modi set August 15, 2015, as the deadline for providing toilets in all government schools across the country.


He also asked corporates to use their CSR funds for the purpose. As of Tuesday, PSUs and corporates had pledged to pick up the tabs for building 43,509 toilets. Of these, corporates account for 16,009 toilets. Read more....
