‘Swachh Haryana Abhiyan’ makes little difference

The much-hyped week-long campaign under the “Swachh Haryana, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” that ended this past Friday seems to have made little difference to the sanitation situation in the urban villages of the Millennium City.


Less than four days after the campaign concluded, animals rummaging through an enormous garbage pile on the outskirts of these villages bear testimony to the fact that nothing has really changed. Vijender Mehra, who runs a car repair shop in Wazirabad village, said: “Even during the campaign week, no official or safai karamchari turned up to clean the dumping site outside my shop. It is a nuisance, with foul smell emanating from it. The garbage is scattered all over the road and is an open invitation to stray animals. If the Municipal Corporation Gurgaon keeps a bin at the site, at least it will not litter.”


Another villager, Raghubir Yadav, said complaints were made to the councillor and MCG officials several times, but no action was taken. “We were hoping the situation would change with the launch of the campaign, but that too proved to be a political gimmick,” said Mr. Yadav. Read more....
