The Hindu, 23 November 2014

K.C. Venugopal, MP, has said that the State government was mulling over a proposal to establish over 40 public toilets in various parts of the district. He added that the project has been recommended by the Roads and National Highways wings of the Public Works Department and that the feasibility study will be undertaken by the Revenue Department.

Convening a meeting at the District Collectorate, Mr. Venugopal said that the proposed project aimed at establishing toilet facilities at the commonly frequented areas such as major road sides, markets and bus stations. It was intended to be a comprehensive project that would set a model in the State. The feasibility study would take into consideration the potential utilisation of a proposed toilet in a particular area, he said.

He added that maintenance works would be undertaken at the existing toilets to ensure public hygiene. He also directed the District Tourism Promotion Council to ensure similar facilities at places, including the Punnamada Finishing Point and the Alappuzha Beach where large number of people visited on a regular basis. He agreed to sanction funds for the purpose from the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. Read more....
